Third Suspect At Large In Shooting Death Of Off-Duty CPD Officer

Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s voice cracked while he was addressing the media about another fallen officer, 23-year-old John Rivera. Rivera had two years on the force.

Right now, two suspects are being charged. According to police an additional suspect is still at large.

One of the two men charged was once involved with CPD. 24-year-old Menelik Jackson was disqualified from being a Chicago police candidate. Now, he's accused of shooting an officer and his friends.

The superintendent says Jackson was the one who pulled the trigger. He's facing first degree murder charges as well as three counts of attempted murder. Jackson is also being charged with resisting arrest.

Police say he didn't act alone; 32-year-old Jovan Battle is also facing murder charges.

Battle is no stranger to CPD; he has an 18 page criminal history with 10 convictions of violent crimes.

Investigators say this nightmare began around two on Saturday morning at the McDonald’s downtown.

The suspects had an altercation with a group of Hispanic men and they reportedly didn't let it go; they wanted to get back at these men.

Johnson's son worked with Rivera in the 6th district. He says officers there lost a friend and Chicago lost a young guardian.
