Black History Verified: Rebuilding Chicago’s Home of Gospel Music

Pilgrim Baptist Church was a refuge for Black people migrating from the Jim Crow South in the late 1920s. Under the musical leadership of Thomas A Dorsey, it became the birthplace of Gospel music and a sacred space to explore faith and music on the South Side. Since 2006, Pilgrim has been recovering from a devastating fire that destroyed the building—but its leaders have faith that this historic church will rise from the ashes.
