Chicago's Flavor - Fridays 7PM
The U is bringing the origin stories behind famous Chicago food legends in a five-episode series, Chicago’s Flavor. Narrated by Chicago broadcast legend Bill Kurtis, each program focuses on the families, the relentless work and the risk they took to build a signature dish into not only a business, but an empire. Chicago’s Flavor airs Fridays, beginning September 18, at 7PM.
Chicago’s Flavor features in-depth interviews, historical archives, and verité filmmaking from those who built it, and those who continue to create the mouth-watering recipes. “These foods need no introduction,” says legendary Chicago anchorman and program narrator, Bill Kurtis. “They are fixtures in our city, steeped in tradition. They are part of Chicago’s history, and its future. Chicago’s Flavor brings the whole story to the viewers.”
Here is the schedule of classic Chicago brands featured each week:
· September 18 - Al’s #1 Italian Beef
· September 25 - Nuts on Clark
· October 2 - Lou Malnati’s
· October 9 – The Original Rainbow Cone
· October 23 - Vienna Beef
Highlights include the family history that led to the legendary Al’s Beef sandwich, a look into the three generations running Nuts on Clark, and how an immigrant story made Lou Malnati’s pizza synonymous with Chicago. Chicago’s Flavor also unearths the 100-year-old origins of The Original Rainbow Cone and the reasoning behind its five-layer ice cream treat. Finally, viewers will discover why a sausage stand at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair fed the city’s appetite for Vienna Beef.
Chicago’s Flavor will celebrate our city, reveal the twists and turns that helped shape our culinary legacy, and make all of Chicago hungry.
