Possible Impeachment: Impact on 2020 Election

After months of mounting pressure, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is falling in line with fellow Democrats. The California Democrat announced Wednesday plans for a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The inquiry comes after a whistleblower report about President Trump and a conversation he had with the president of Ukraine back in July. It claims Trump pressured the Ukrainian president to look into Democratic presidential frontrunner and former vice president, Joe Biden. He also reportedly asked for information about Biden’s son, Hunter.

Along with the whistleblower report, The Washington Post reports the president ordered his administration to put a freeze on $391 million in aid to the country. The order came just days before the conversation happened.

"The President of the United States has admitted that he spoke to the president of a foreign country,” said House Speaker Pelosi. She continued calling for Trump’s administration to hand over the full whistleblower report. “He will have to choose whether to break the law or honor his responsibility to the constitution."

The White House responded to Pelosi's announcement in a statement, saying "House Democrats have destroyed any chances of legislative progress for the people of this country by continuing to focus all their energy on partisan political attacks."

Republican lawmakers also came to the President’s defense after the announcement. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said of Pelosi’s decision, "She cannot

change the laws of this congress.” He continued saying Pelosi “cannot unilaterally decide an impeachment inquiry.”

Right now, more than two-thirds of the House is reportedly in support of impeaching President Trump.
