Mayoral Candidates Discuss Jussie Smollett And Other Issues Affecting Chicagoans

Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle have met twice just this week in heated debates. On Tuesday, the Jussie Smollett case dominated a portion of the conversation.

But, the debated issues focused on topics impacting Chicagoans, like violence and police misconduct.

When it comes to misconduct, Preckwinkle made it a point to state that most officers are good and decent people who put their lives on the line to keep communities safe.

However, Preckwinkle says the city needs to make it a priority to address the code of silence and racism that lives within the department, and figure out how to implement the consent decree.

A heated exchange happened mid-way through Preckwinkle’s answer when she was interrupted by the moderator who asked, “What would you do differently than Lightfoot?”

But, she failed to provide a different answer, which is something Lightfoot took advantage of. Lightfoot said she was surprised Preckwinkle kept repeating that the issue lies with Superintendent Eddie Johnson when he's addressed everything she mentions.

Lightfoot took the opportunity to discuss her public safety plan addressing police misconduct.

These women will face off on another debate Wednesday evening.
