CTU voting on authorization of a strike

Voting is underway for the Chicago Teacher's Union with a strike looming in the next two weeks. The vote among the CTU is for whether or not it'll authorize a strike as contract negotiations are still up in the air. Voting started yesterday and will continue until at least tomorrow. In order to strike, there must be a 75 percent vote in favor the earliest strike could happen October 7th. The CTU has been in talks with Chicago Public Schools overpay and shortages in staffing. CPS has said the latest offer was one of the biggest ever from the district, but the CTU says instead of the 16 percent raise over a five-year contract that was offered, they want a 15 percent raise over a three-year contract. Besides a raise, the union wants smaller class sizes, more special education teachers, social workers, and librarians added across the district. Mayor Lori Lightfoot said yesterday they have added those positions to the budget and so there's no way a deal can't be reached.
