Chicago Activists Plan Rally

More than 15-hundred people signed against it, Mayor Lori Lightfoot tried to stop it, and still the U.S. Customs and Border Protection conference will start Tuesday, as planned.

Activists are not giving up. They are holding a vigil outside the Marriott Marquis Hotel starting at 11 a.m. They're demanding an immediate cease of all actions that terrorize immigrant families.

After the vigil, which will feature seven crosses bearing the names of the people who have died at immigration agencies, immigrant rights groups planned out a rally at 11:30.

That's the same time Kevin McAleenan, the acting secretary of U.S. Department of Homeland Security is set to speak at the conference.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot spoke up about this saying she tried to move the Customs and Border Protection conference to a location outside of Chicago.

It became clear that Marriott was unable to accommodate that demand, resorting to peaceful protests against the conference.

Activists say by hosting a conference of CBP officials, Marriott is participating in creating an unsafe environment for Chicago residents.

The hotel in a statement said they would accommodate CBP as if they were any other guests and just because they're doing that doesn't mean they take a position on the views of CBP.

A spokesperson for CBP says the conference is to discuss new trade trends, concerns in the industry and the status affairs in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
