New Humboldt Park Summer Sports Program

Students from Roberto Clemente High School  have an exciting summer ahead. Thanks to Chicago Public Schools and the dedication of a community member, 350 students can participate in a six week sports program that will include basketball, swimming and softball.

Theresa Siaw, of OMNI Healthcare, donated about $35,000 to kick off the Humboldt Park Summer Program in hopes of keeping students off the streets with crime rates rising in the neighborhood. More than 300 Humboldt Park high school students were selected by the school and sponsored by Siaw.

Humboldt Park’s crime rate is 87% higher than the national average, with residents struggling to stay safe, avoiding stray gunshots. Last year, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s One Summer Plus program, which provided high school students with summer jobs, led to violent-crime arrests falling by 43%. This program is put in place to aid in the efforts of keeping Chicago youth safe.
