UIC Grad Workers Go On Indefinite Strike

UIC graduate workers and assistants reach no deal with the university administration on a new labor contract. They’ve been trying to negotiate a contract for the past year, to no avail.

The university has already said they would raise wages, but it's just not enough. Tuesday morning, a strike will begin outside several buildings on UIC'S east campus.

There will be a unified picket outside Jane Addams Hull house at 12:30 later on that day. Until there is some type of agreement or negotiation, these workers are not going to show up to work today and they don't know when they're going to come back.

The union representing these workers, The UIC Graduate Employees Organization, says they've been working without a contract since September 30th.

The problem here, according to the union, is that the workers get paid a little as $18,000, but they’re fined up to $2,000 in university fees.

Low pay, high fees, they say can negatively impact their success in school and in health.
