NYE Celebrations Around the Chicagoland Area

We’re getting the New Year’s Eve party started, but we want to make sure you party responsibly.

According to the Chicago Police Department, there are plans in in place to increase security around the city for New Year’s Eve.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson says there will also be a large number of officers. He adds we'll see high visibility specifically in the downtown area.

If you’re driving out of the city, know that Illinois State Police is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation and added patrols on the roads. This will continue until Tuesday.

According to IDOT, last year, there were six people who died on Illinois roads and four were alcohol related, but that can be avoided by taking free CTA rides.

CTA is offering free rides on trains and buses from 10 p.m. tonight until 4 a.m. New Year’s Day. Something happening for the first time is fireworks on the Chicago River. Hang out around Franklin or Clark Street or Wabash Avenue.

If you're staying home to celebrate is that you cannot shoot your guns to ring in the New Year. CPD says the New Year should be celebrated with your car off the street and your gun kept safe.

Celebratory gunfire is illegal and offenders will be prosecuted.
