CPD Confirms Suicide of a Seventh District Officer

The Chicago Police Department is starting off the New Year with heart-breaking news.

Another officer who worked in the seventh district took his own life. Sources tell The Jam, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

According to reports, the officer was found dead at his home. He had worked for the department for six years.

2018 was a tough year for the department; four officers committed suicide before ending the year.

According to the Department of Justice, the suicide rate in the Chicago Police Department is 60 percent higher than the national average. They say that's due to gun violence and high murder rates exposing officers to trauma.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson says they have resources at the department, such as chaplains and counselors to help officers in need. “We had a terrible 2018 in terms of officers getting hurt, killed and committing suicide,” he says. “Yet these officers come out every day and every night and do what we ask them to do.”

There are six chaplains and five therapists to serve more than 13,000 employees.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts you can get help by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Their number is 800-273-8255.
