COPA Releases Shooting Video

A video just released by COPA shows the moment an officer shoots a felon who, they say, was armed with a gun and metal-piercing bullets.

The shooting happened on Halloween on the city's East Chatham neighborhood, which is on the South Side. Officers started in a foot chase and ended by calling for an ambulance.

Right now, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability continues to investigate the shooting of 23-year-old Derrell Johnson. On Halloween, as he's seen fleeing police, an officer is seen shooting his gun at him and striking him.

Police say Johnson is a suspected gang member and convicted felon.

In the body camera footage, you can hear gun shots as the officer runs down the stairs toward Johnson. We then see Johnson shot following the officer's instruction of getting down on the floor.

That officer handcuffs him, but another finds a weapon with an extended clip and metal-piercing bullets, that police say belongs to Johnson.

Toward the end of the video the officer tries calming Johnson down as they await the ambulance. Johnson was taken to the hospital and was charged with multiple felonies including aggravated assault to an officer.
