June 1- Svengoolie-in Berwyn- TODAY!!!
One hundred years ago, a small suburb west of Chicago was established- and, grew in popularity and renown, aided and abetted by first, the original Svengoolie, and then- his “son.”
This afternoon, a parade will be held in honor of 100 years of- say it with me- BERWYN!!! And yours truly, Svengoolie, will be there to help celebrate!
Once again, here are the details- the parade will start out at 2 pm from Lombard and Cermak, and then make its way down Cermak Road. I will be near the very front of the parade, so DON’T get there late! We will go down Cermak west to Riverside Drive- going southwest to Home Avenue, then north to Morton High School. (Here’s a tip- it may be less hectic along the end parts of the route after Cermak Road-better sight lines!!! It may be a little more exciting to be standing with the crowds on Cermak though…so, choose as you wish!)If you’re a Sven fan, wear your Sven shirt (if you don’t have one, head to Horrorbles on Roosevelt near Oak Park Avenue before the parade- they should have some in stock!) It’s sure to be a fun time…
However, here’s some disturbing news- we’ve gotten word that the big Svengoolie wall mural that was (legally) painted by a young graffiti artist and his crew, which we featured on our show last week- has been painted over! Something new is there – so, I’m glad we got pictures of it from some of our loyal fans before it was…uh… “retired!” Too bad it’s gone, just after we promoted it on our program- which would have brought MORE people to the Berwyn area to view it. Oh, well…maybe we can call it “Spindle Jr.”…
Have you ever checked out the Frequently asked questions here on the Sven website page? If so, you already know this- but, I just thought I’d state for the record- NO- I do not live in Berwyn. I have never lived in Berwyn. I did not attend Morton
East High School-even if your father/uncle/great aunt swears they went to school there with me. I went to Maine East High School in Park Ridge- the same place Harrison Ford went, the same place Hilary Clinton went until she was transferred to a different Maine School (at one time- not in Hilary’s high school era, but just on the edges of mine- there were actually North, South, East and West Maine high schools! Maine North closed down after only ten years- and you can see it as the school in “Breakfast Club!”)
Even if I’m not a Berwyn resident, I will be proud to help celebrate 100 years of Berwyn today- hope to see you there!
