May 2- Sven-gratulations to Two Local Broadcasters!
Some good things are happening for a couple people I’ve mentioned here before, and I just thought I’d share the good news today- instead of doing all the usual whining and complaining that you’ve come to expect from me.
First of all, my friend Candi, who recently left her old radio home, already has a NEW radio gig! You will hear her on the weekends on KISS-FM (105.3)- Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons! Obviously, her talent is appreciated, and I’ll bet we’ll be hearing even more from her, as she expands her horizons into other new projects- maybe we can convince her to show up on our program again, if we promise she won’t have to wear a pith helmet again, like she did in the “Gold Digger” song parody (which will be coming up again in “Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy” next month!)
Second, you might remember my mentioning, a while back, that my boss and fearless leader, Neal Sabin, would be inducted into the TV Academy Silver Circle- a prestigious group consisting of broadcast veterans who have been in television for 25 years or more, and have made significant
contributions to Chicago television. His induction takes place tonight, as he and the other members of this “Class of ‘08” are welcomed into the Silver Circle in a special event, which I will be attending with others from our station. Among the other honorees are Cheryl Stutzke- whom I know from the “old days” (i.e., the Bill Jackson/Jerry G. Bishop era) at WFLD-and the beloved Bob Bell, WGN’s original Bozo, Andy Starr, etc., being honored posthumously. Our old pal Dean Richards will induct Mr. Bell.
In fact, it was Neal who inducted ME into the Silver Circle back in 2004!Perhaps he can paraphrase the old Groucho Marx line about not wanting to join any club that would accept him as a member- and say he doesn’t want to join any organization that would accept ME as a member! Regardless,
Neal certainly has made his contributions to Chicago TV- having gone from radio (where he worked with our friends Steve and Johnnie, who were instrumental in first getting me in touch with Neal to work at this station) to television, making channel 50 a success (remember when channel 50 WAS a success?!)-then coming to WCIU, to establish it as a mainstream independent station- and make it a viable contender far faster than anyone thought possible. He helped build this company into an entire station group, with stations in Milwaukee and South Bend, and introducing Me-TV and Me-Too to the viewing audience- not to mention still keeping me employed (he always jokes that he has to keep me around, because I’m the only one here who remembers the lines from movies and TV shows that he throws out in random conversations!)
So- best wishes to these two individuals- may their talent and good fortune rub off on those of us fortunate enough to know them!
