Do you ever get those charity requests in the mail that have a nickel or dime or quarter attached to them? Does it annoy you as much as it does me? I’m sure these charities are legit, but- why would I want to send a donation to a charity that is silly enough to send money out, that most people won’t ever return- and they’re asking ME to send more money, so they can waste it that way? I know, I know, “it’s just a nickel”- but, still- if the need for funds is so critical- how can they waste ANY of the money they have? Okay, thanks for letting me vent…
Got an e-mail from Mark Yurkiw- he and Ted Okuda are the guys writing the “Chicago Horror shows-from Shock Theatre to Svengoolie” book. After many delays, it now looks like the book will hit stores around November 2.You’ll find substantial chapters on both the original Sven, Jerry G. Bishop, and myself in the book. Mark and Ted will be doing an interview with my friend Bob Sirott on Sunday night the 28th, between 6 and 7 pm, on WGN Radio, if you want to hear more about the book…
We get many requests for all sorts of interviews, both professional and amateur, during this Halloween season, and try to accommodate as many as possible- as Regis says, “I’m just one man!” We apologize if we can’t get back to everyone- and remind you that, although “ ‘tis the season” right now- the show IS on the air all year long…
…which leads me –or does it? –to today’s monstrous movie pick. Let me present to you- 1965’s “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors!” A fun British film, it brings us a group of train travelers who encounter a Dr. Shreck (the great Peter Cushing) in a railroad car- and have him read their tarot cards. Every one of them has a fortune that ends in their demise, and each involves a theme utilized in horror films. I’m a big fan of these anthology films, with a group of stories held together by a central premise- and this one is a good one, especially for fans of British horror! You get noted actors like Christopher lee, Michael Gough, and even Donald Sutherland- and some truly creepy tales, with an ending that…well, wait and see the final stop for the train. “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” has a one-track mind- shakes on a train! (I can’t believe I actually wrote that…)
