Our friends at the Chicago Museum of Broadcast Communications- which is thankfully back under construction- have mentioned to me that they have put up a special seasonal addition to the museum’s on-line store! It’s “Svengoolie’s Horror Picks”- a selection of some of my favorite dvds to help make the scary season more scary! Check them out, and remember that the proceeds help benefit this great treasure of a museum-which, upon completion, will be an amazing place to look at broadcasting history! If you remember the original museum, then you know how cool the new one is going to be- and any fan of local broadcasting will love all the Chicago television represented there! You can check out my picks at www.tvondvdshop.com on the MBC site.

I’ve been a part of events, tapings, and viewings at both the original museum, in that “Jetsons”-looking building, and the second location in the Cultural Center-and can’t wait for the new version- right near where the old WFLD-channel 32 –used to be (which is now the House of Blues!)

Speaking of picks- how about today’s Halloween season monstrous movie pick? Let’s go with the whole museum theme and choose –“The Relic!” Shot in Chicago, this 1997 movie was directed by Peter Hyams- who, at one point, was a news anchor here – possibly at channel 2. I always remember that he would read stories of murder, death and devastation with a weird looking smile on his face! Regardless, this story of a strange and deadly creature on the loose in a museum has plenty of scares- including an eerie scene down in the underground exhibit storage area with the creature stalking a museum employee. It’s based on an excellent novel written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (by all means, READ THE BOOK- and any of their other books- they’re favorites of mine!)

You’ll love the shots of the Field Museum and other Chicago landmarks- but, the frightening story of a reception for an new exhibit that ends up being crashed by the murderous monster might just have you looking over your shoulder next time you visit the museum campus!
