…did you ever think that finding a “good” Frankenstein mask would be a difficult task? I mean, one that really LOOKS like the Monster as seen in Universal flicks. From when I was just a youngster, I recall masks of the Monster being available, not just at Halloween in vast quantities, but also through the rest of the year from gag companies like Johnson-Smith, and of course, in Forrest Ackerman’s great “famous Monsters of Filmland” magazine- it seems to me that I recall Forry having a wide variety, including one he listed as the “thin Frankenstein” and a few others.
The reason I bring this up is-we were in search of a “good” Frankenstein mask, since we’re producing shows for our big “Franken-Fall”- the upcoming run of a whole bunch of great Universal Frankenstein flicks that will start the weekend before Halloween, and continue right on through December!
I decided we really needed a solid depiction for our show- and came up empty! First off, it seems that an old-timey monster like Big Frank isn’t a popular costume these days- oh, you find more than enough Freddys, PinHeads, Jasons, and even that “Saw” goof- but the classic Frank? Not in evidence anywhere. The closest I saw was a really cartoon-like Monster, which wasn’t what we needed. How the mighty have fallen!
Fear not, however, fans of Frankenstein- thanks to dear Elizabeth from our sponsor “Horrorbles”- we have a great mask! She obtained it from someone who has a wide array of various props- in fact, we think this mask was used as a prop on a dummy, since- it didn’t have eye or nose holes! We carefully added some, and, though it was a tight fit for our cast member “?” (we call him that in honor of Boris Karloff’s original billing)- it worked- and you’ll see it soon!
Okay, another quick monstrous movie pick as we head towards Halloween- let’s make it “Alien”-Ridley Scott’s 1979 galactic gorefest that has Sigourney Weaver and crew answer what they think is an SOS call- and discovers a huge hive nest of fearsome creatures- one of which puts a crew member into a coma, and then, supposedly dies. From “face-huggers” to “chest-bursters”- to one of modern monsterdom’s most fearsome creatures- “Alien” more than earns its green card!
