Okay, “thirty days has November- and my uncle Leo for speeding…” – time to wrap up the next-to-last month of the year. I had such a good time yesterday, talking about “one-hit wonder” movies on Svengoolie- movies that we only got to air ONCE on the show, for whatever reason- that I thought we could continue talking about some of them today. One of the weirdest we’ve had was “Blood and Donuts” (sounds like a Homer Simpson vampire movie!) Actually, it is a vampire movie- in which a guy shooting golf balls off his high-rise shatters a window on a building, and the ball knocks open a crate in the building that a young long-haired vampire guy rests in- so, he’s revived and starts trying to find parts of his previous waking life. Among his pals are a goofy Borat-accented cab driver and –the young woman who works at an all-night donut shop. You even get modern horror great David Cronenberg ( of “Scanners” fame) as a sort of “business man/mob boss!” I’m truly sorry we only got one shot at that one. One I’m actually happy we only saw once- “the Raffle!” First off- NOT a horror film- we’ve had success on our show with non-horror titles, but, boy, this wasn’t one of them. Two wacky out-of-work pals come up with a way to make money by trying to find the most beautiful woman in the world- then having a lottery for someone to win a date with her. Mark Hamill –Luke Skywalker, for pity’s sake-has a bit part in it! Lots of bimbos, but, sorry, guys- it’s another “pg-13” film. “PG” must stand for “pretty gruesome.” Maybe that’s why I had it on my show! Okay, one more- and not a bad one- Chicago’s own Lisa Zane in “the Nurse!” Yep, she’s the sister of Billy Zane, who you recently saw on the show as the demon “Collector” in “Tales from the Crypt: Demon Night.” Lisa plays a woman who masquerades as a home care nurse- in order to get close to a paralyzed businessman whom she blames for the death of her family. See, he caused her father to lose everything- which drove him crazy, driving him to wipe out the family and commit suicide. When the businessguy heard about what happened, he had a stroke, leaving him in this catatonic state. So- Lisa becomes his nurse, then starts killing off the members of HIS family. A pretty creepy movie. Trivia time- she also did voices for some Marvel Comics cartoons- “Iron man” and “the Incredible Hulk!” Want me explore more one-hit wonders that ran on Svengoolie? Let me know- or, if you have other things you’d like me to tackle- just send ‘em to svengoolie@wciu.com See you tomorrow with more blog!
