Did you carve your Jack O’Lantern yet? Isn’t it kind of early? Seems to me, I carve the pumpkin, and , within a couple days, it’s turning into a science project, growing home-made penicillin. Not to mention the odor of rotting pumpkin innards…mmmm-BOY! Actually, the Jack O’Lantern gets even scarier looking as it rots- the teeth curl in- the face becomes mummified. They end up looking like that British judge on “Dancing with the Stars…”

I always laugh when I read the old legend that the original “Jack O’ Lantern” was allegedly a spirit who wandered the countryside carrying his light in a…turnip!!! How come THAT never caught on in this country? Carving turnips- making turnip pies- roasting turnip seeds…just remember, for those ‘Halloween in July” parties, you can’t “ beet” carving a watermelon Jack O’ Lantern! Every one of them looks like the Hulk.

What’s the deal with those plasticene pumpkins that look like real ones- but they’re hollow and you can carve them and keep them from year to year? Isn’t part of the fun carving a new design every year? Not to mention the frustration of the poor juvenile delinquents who try to smash the fake pumpkins, and they just bounce, laughing in the face of these poor pitiful pranksters.

Let’s connect our “Countdown to Halloween” scary movie pick for today to pumpkins- with the gourd from the grave- “Pumpkinhead!” This 1988 horror favorite tells the story of a simple rural storekeeper and his son. When some wealthy city kids come riding around and accidentally kill the son, the distraught dad decides he must get revenge on them- he seeks out an old woman who knows how to raise a deadly demon known as “Pumpkinhead”- to give those nasty kids what they deserve. But soon the dad- the always amazing Lance Henriksen- learns that vengeance comes at a price. Director Stan Winston’s special effects make this movie a must- see- and the sequel “Pumpkinhead: Blood Wings” makes for a great double feature!

This pumpkinhead’s candle is just about out- so, I’ll close ‘til tomorrow. The weekend’s coming, and our Sven show has a contemporary music video that you’re gonna love! More about that later- meanwhile, keep in touch- I’m at svengoolie@wciu.com !
