Chicago’s municipal ID program has a delay

Chicago's new municipal ID program known as the CityKey is having a slower turn out than expected. There are many applicants, but the City Clerk of Chicago cannot keep up with processing the applications.

This program was rolled out by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in May. Since then more than 11,000 cards have been issued. That's less than one percent of Chicago’s 2.7 million residents who have the IDs.

The cards can be used by anyone, but they're extremely helpful for the immigrant community as it provides a form of identification.

The Chicago Tribune says the amount of CityKey cards issued at this time means it is likely the city will not reach its goal of handing out 100,000 free cards this year.

The City Clerk of Chicago office is in charge of the program. According to the department, they have made changes to speed up the process.

When getting a card you have two options, either going to city hall or getting the application online.
