Body camera footage released in shooting death of Maurice Granton Jr.

Maurice Granton Jr.’s family and their attorney say his shooting death is unjustifiable. COPA released body cam footage yesterday that shows a portion of what happened that evening.

Granton's father said watching the video was tough.

The video was released by COPA Wednesday only after the family of the deceased saw it first.

According to Chicago Police, on June 6th around 8:15 p.m. tactical officers from the 2nd district were conducting a narcotics investigation around the 300 block of East 47th Street in Bronzeville.

That is when Granton ran away from the officers. The chase started and after telling him to stop CPD says, “The man produced a weapon and an armed encounter between the offender and police ensued.”

That’s not enough for Granton's family.

His father says the narrative is an armed confrontation, but what he saw in the video is his son running away with no weapon in his hand.

The family could file a lawsuit on Monday, it’s still tentative.
