Weigel Broadcasting Co. is pleased to offer its internship program to aspiring students. We are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic combined with creativity and a keen interest in the broadcast industry. Strong communication and organizational skills are required. Interns must possess a willingness to work as part of a team in any capacity from administration work to creative brainstorming. Add on to your internship experience by attending all our live Game of the Week broadcast and promotional station events. These extra experiences are so beneficial to your career growth—they are required. The most dependable, enthusiastic, creative, and inquisitive students benefit the most from this internship.
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTSThe internship requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week for a minimum of 13 weeks. Hours range from 5am—7pm, Monday through Friday. Some weekend hours will be required. There is no pay associated with the internship and to qualify the student must receive college credit for the experience.
AVAILABLE INTERNSHIPS:You & Me This Morning is a local morning talk & entertainment program that airs Monday through Friday from 6am-8am. The show focuses on everything Chicago. From entertainment, to cooking, to relationships, You & Me features regular contributors and segments along with pre-produced pieces. The You & Me internship offers a complete overview of a morning talk show as well as insight into the television industry. Interns will assist in in-studio segments as well as field pieces throughout the Chicago area. Interns will also assist in researching, writing, and contacting local businesses for segments and pieces that will air on You & Me. Interns must be extremely organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Avid, Edius, and iNews is helpful but not necessary. Shift times are between 6am-2pm.
PRODUCTION INTERNGet first-hand exposure or hands-on experience in careers such as Production Assistant, Producer, Editor, Director, Audio Technician, Technical Director, Camera Operators and other production related jobs. Learn about each phase of production as we works with other departments like Sales, Traffic, Master Control and others to ensure that all our productions are carried out smoothly and broadcast successfully. Put your skills and knowledge to work and assist our team as we produce commercials, field and studio productions, sports and public affairs programming and more. Typical intern responsibilities include researching current events and communities for our public affairs shows, assisting with studio and field shoots, logging footage, writing scripts as well as other administrative tasks. Depending on the intern's skill level, they may have the opportunity to write, produce, edit or shoot their own project.
WEB INTERNThe web is an important piece of television's future! Our web intern will be knee-deep in the ongoing evolution of television's presence across multiple platforms. They'll assist in the daily population and creation of web content, and help support our active online community, plus they can also help out and learn about other departments. Applicant must have light experience with web development or web design, and experience tinkering with social media. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite is preferred. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP are all great, but by no means required.
FIRST BUSINESS NEWS INTERNInterns play an important role in the production of First Business News, a financial news & analysis program syndicated daily to more than 125 US television markets and 46 foreign countries every morning. Intern duties include: segment producing, field producing, writing, research, pitching story ideas and booking interviews. A basic knowledge of the financial markets and business is helpful, but not required. Familiarity with Avid is a plus. First Business News tapes in the afternoon; the program airs the next morning. A typical full working day is between 9:30am & 5:30pm. Interns usually work a combination of full and half days.
SALES/RESEARCH INTERNInterns will research potential companies for sponsorship, research information that can enhance sales pitches and research other media outlets that sell sponsorship packages. They will also prepare talent and attend appearances, scan video tapes to help prepare sales tape, help prepare PowerPoint presentations, proof and file sales contracts and work with various Account Executives on day-to-day projects. Interns will also work with ratings and research to produce sales sheets for Chicago, Milwaukee and South Bend stations, update inventory and track programming changes for Chicago stations, maintain sales research and use Excel for tracking and rating reports. Interns must be organized, dependable and pay attention to detail. Strong computer skills required.
ON-AIR PROMOTIONS INTERNOn-Air Promotion Interns will assist in the preparation of on-air promotional elements for broadcast, screening programs for clips and logging shows. In the screening process, interns are encouraged to identify promotable themes within shows for WCIU, ME-TV, ABC 57 and WB25. Interns will write creative copy for promos and voice-overs and observe the overall on-air promotional process from concept to broadcast. Interns need to be detail oriented, thorough, and have a good grasp of language skills. Interns must also be fairly knowledgeable about popular culture and entertainment trends, past and present.
GREEN SCREEN ADVENTURESFloor-direct a fast-paced chase scene between a hapless mouse and a sly jaguar or help a little boy get ready for his first appearance on television. Learn all aspects of live studio production. Green Screen Adventures (GSA) gives second- through eighth-graders the opportunity to see their stories featured on television. We use sketch comedy, puppetry, and song to bring students' stories to life. But it is not all laughs. We openly discuss serious issues - bullying, discrimination, and loss. Interns participate in all aspects of production: Floor direct, work on props and costumes, search for photo backgrounds, research, and organize scripts. Bring your own talents to the table—write sketches, create Photoshop backgrounds, take photos, and more. GSA tapes on Tuesday and Thursday nights and two Saturdays a month. Interns must be available to work at the majority of sessions.
MARKETING INTERNMarketing interns will help with all levels of promotion and station advertising/marketing. This includes organizing and updating the press for contact information, sending press releases, compiling contest data, organizing and analyzing advertising as it relates to outside advertising campaigns in spreadsheet form, working with vendors and media representative, and participating at events for station and client promotion. Interns are required to attend promotional events. Opportunities also exist to work with on-air producers and schedulers to meet deadlines. Interns will also work with the Art Department to gather materials and elements provided by a syndicator for design.
THIS TV CHICAGO INTERNCandidate will assist in conceptualizing, writing, and producing on-air promotional advertising. In addition, the ideal candidate will also write and produce, radio, cable, and print ads when asked. Must possess basic editing skills on Final Cut Pro systems, and must be familiar with other existing edit and production systems found within this facility. Heavy emphasis on writing and well as editing must be underscored. Other duties as deemed appropriate and assigned. Candidate must have television arts background focusing on a degree in television or marketing. Strong creative background, excellent writing and communication skills required. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop and llustrator, Avid and Final Cut Pro edit systems is required.
